Where can I find an index wheel for my lathe?
Index wheels can be ordered from this website. There are three standard sizes. Order the size that fits the diameter of your chuck (1 inch, 1 1/4 inch or 34 mm (metric). Custom sizes can be provided.
Are there limitations for the kind of lathe used?
Lathes from 12 inch to 25 inch capacity with a flat lathe bed can be used.
Are special tools needed to assemble the Flute Master?
The only tool needed is a 3/16 inch hex wrench, which is included. A hole in the tool holder is a convenient place to store the wrench.
What kind of router is used with the Flute Master?
Ridgid 2401 and Trend T4 palm routers, and rotary drills such as a Mastercarver, Foredom, or Wecheer can be used. A foot control is used. The Foredom, Mastercarver and Wecheer have handles that are one inch in diameter. Specific models that work with the Flute Master are shown on the Accessory page of this website.
Are other accessories needed?
Stop blocks that attach to the lathe bed are used to control the beginning and ending of flutes. If using an index wheel an aluminum pin holder that locks the index wheel in position is used. A pin holder for index wheels is included with Flute Master for all sizes of lathes. Stop blocks, tool handle bushing, Proximity depth guide, index wheel and index wheel pin holder are included with the Flute Master.
Can I cut tapered flutes?
Cut tapered-out flutes by presenting the router bit to the wood on an angle. As the cut progresses move the angle of the router bit to a 90 degree angle for a full depth flute cut. See the example in the Gallery for the candlestick holder. The flutes on the globe are tear-shaped. If using the Proximity depth guide, hold the cutting tool at right angles to the turning as the profile of the turning curves.
Can any cuts be made other than longitudinal?
The tool can be used to cut insets, mortises and router profiles around a turning with the lathe running. Drill any angle on a horizontal plane with the lathe turned off.
How many flutes can be cut on a turning?
The circumference of a circle is 3.1414 times the diameter. For example, if the diameter to be fluted is 6 inches the circumference is 18.8. If cutting flutes 1/2 inch wide with 1/4 inches between flutes, then the number of flutes is 1/2 plus 1/4 (3/4 inch) divided into 18. Answer: 25. You would probably use 24. Be careful to calculate both the largest and smallest diameter to be fluted.
Has the Flute Master been tested?
The Flute Master was a new tool in 2012. It has been used and tested by members of the Central Oklahoma Woodturners Association, and is in use by turners from Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington and California on the west coast to Maine on the east coast, and in Norway, Denmark, Ireland, England, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It has proven to be an easy to use, heavy duty complete tool that cuts flutes and reeds quickly and uniformly.
